Salmonella Shigella Agar (SS Agar), 500 g, HiMedia is a selective and differential medium designed for the isolation and differentiation of Salmonella and Shigella species from clinical, food, and environmental samples.
The medium contains bile salts and brilliant green to inhibit Gram-positive bacteria and many Gram-negative coliforms, allowing selective growth of pathogenic enteric bacteria. Lactose and neutral red are included for differentiation based on lactose fermentation, while sodium thiosulfate and ferric citrate enable detection of hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) production.
Typical colony characteristics:
Salmonella: colorless colonies with black centers (H₂S positive)
Shigella: colorless colonies (non-lactose fermenting)
Lactose fermenters: pink/red colonies
